Ian Njoroge Accused Of mistreating Police Officer To Be Released On Sh700,000 Bond
A 19-year-old student, Ian Njoroge, has been released on a bail of Ksh700,000 after allegedly been reported to have mistreated a police officer along Kamiti Road.Njoroge also to take from the police officer his mobile phone claimed to be worth Ksh50,000 and also a communication radio gadget.
The incident attracted public attention after it went viral on Social Media. On 2nd June 2024, Njoroge denied that he mistreated the police officer, citing that it was self defence. The police officer's name is Jacob Ogendo, who was the Corporal.

Ekhubi ruled out that Article 49(1)(h) of the
Constitution allows the court to free the accused, therefore warranting him a
bail of Sh700,000 to be freed.

James Gachoka argued that an offence involving the
violation of the rights of a police officer is a serious offence to the state
saying that the offence before the victim was of utmost seriousness. He added
that the bail being a constitutional right, demands that in case any of
compelling reasons are available, ultimately the bail must be denied.
Njoroge has been charged also after carrying 5
passengers in the four seater vehicle. On top of the unconstitutional added
passengers on the vehicle, Njoroge also has another charge.
Njoroge did not allow other road users access after
he drove U-turn on Kamiti road at Mirema Junction. It happened at 8PM on 2nd
June 2024.

At QuickMart Supermarket, Njoroge has also
allegedly been claimed to have pushed a police officer outside the car,
therefore adding to his imprisonment charges.
"The accused was herein arrested on Monday and the
Investigating Officer needs time to record statements from intended
witnesses" ruled the Prosecutor.
Defence lawyers Echesa, Lompaa and Okatch opposed
the prosecution of bonding the accused for three days, claiming that the
Njoroge's rights have been denied against the law.
"We are taken aback by the request to detain Njoroge
for three more days to enable the police to come up with reasons for bail
denial" commented
Okatch.
